The Redwings Memorial World Championships of Handboarding never got enough swell at Point Panic this Summer, so they extended their holding period, and moved the competition to Makapu’u.
While the holding period runs through January 22, 2011, the contest may only run on a weekend. Right now, the Mokapu Point buoy forecast (@buoy51202) looks promising, with an increasing North swell building through the upcoming weekend. Early Saturday morning shows a combination of short-period East and North swell, with the North component increasing throughout the day.
The North component is forecast to be 6.2 feet at 13.1 seconds (4°) by Sunday morning, and continue to build throughout the day, which means the second day of competition will see significantly larger surf than the first.
With light winds also in the forecast, look for spots that like a straight North to light up Sunday/Monday.
** Update **
No competition for December 18th – 19th, but a large NNE swell is forecast for next weekend. Not sure how they’ll handle that with Christmas in the mix, contest permits do not allow for competition on a holiday.
